Gladesmore Community School

School Council

Gladesmore students are renowned for championing the school’s REACH values. Amongst these bright stars of the future, students of the school council showcase the very best of the GCS Ethos.

School Council representatives are elected by their year groups.  Students are nominated by their tutor groups and then present a manifesto to the year group in an assembly.  The assembly is followed by an election which is always hotly contested.  Once elected, representatives meet regularly with members of staff to discuss important issues within the school.

Being a School Council representative is a significant role within the school.  The School Council’s responsibilities include:

  • Presenting the views of the student body;
  • Interviewing and informing the selection of new members of staff;
  • Advising the headteacher on improvements to the school and its provision;
  • Welcoming visitors and other dignitaries to the school;
  • Representing the school on educational visits, e.g. accompanying the headteacher to deliver the annual keynote lecture at the University of London UCL Institute of Education;
  • Campaigning for changes their fellow students would like to see around the school;
  • Promoting the general well-being of students
  • Offering advice on policies and initiatives which the school has introduced / is considering introducing.

Just to name a recent example, we say a massive THANK YOU to the School Council for their hard work campaigning for new water fountain facilities. Making use of refillable water bottles has helped tremendously to cut down on plastic waste around school. Watch this space for many more green initiatives in the pipeline!
