Course Outlines
The range of Science GCSE’s are very modern and exciting courses. GCSE Science focuses on the knowledge, skills and understanding of how science works in the world at large as well as in the laboratory.
GCSE Science is a qualification that covers all aspects of a good science education; evaluating evidence and the implications of science for society; explaining, theorizing and modelling in science; procedural and technical knowledge of science practice with emphasis on evaluating evidence and the implications of science for society. The course provides the science knowledge, understanding and skills needed for adult life.
Assessment
To obtain 2 GCSE’s in Science students must complete 2 courses:-
Core Science is examined in 4 parts:-
(1) 3 written exams which are 75% (¾) of the total marks
(2) An Investigative Skills Assessment worth 25% (¼) of the total marks
The 3 modules cover the following areas:
Biology 1 (Human Biology, Evolution and Environment)
Chemistry 1 (Products from Rocks, Oils, Earth and Atmosphere)
Physics 1 (Energy and Electricity, Radiation and the Universe)
Additional Science – has greater emphasis on explaining, theorizing and modelling in science. The assessment is as follows:-
(1) 3 written exam papers (Biology 2, Chemistry 2 and Physics 2). Each written paper is worth 25% (¼) of the final mark
(2) An Investigative Skills Assessment worth 25% (¼) of the total marks
Triple Science - students complete 3 separate science GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The course is aimed at those wishing to study science at A Level and then at university. The assessment is as follows:-
