Technology - Graphics

Course Outline

GCSE Graphics is made up of 4 compulsory units.

  1. Sustainable Design (20% Exam)
  2. Introduction to designing and making (30% Coursework)
  3. Technical aspects of designing and making (20% Exam)
  4. Making quality products (30% Coursework)

You will learn to develop your design and drawing techniques, rendering and annotation skills as well as increase your ICT skills in 2D Design. You will be taught how to design and make unique and innovative high quality products from a wide range of materials.

The following are examples of successful products that students have made in the past: Educational Books with moving parts and pop ups, Point of Sale Displays, CD Covers, Luxurious Packaging, Menus and Board Games. All the products have a high quality professional finish as they are produced by CAD/CAM using the laser cutter and the Roland Camm Machine (the two machines are used in industry).

In order to be successful in GCSE Graphics you must be organised and independent, have excellent attendance, be fully equipped for all lessons, complete unfinished class work at home, spend at least 2 hours each week on homework, be able to meet strict coursework deadlines and attend the weekly design club after school. Also it is essential to have good ICT skills especially in 2D Design.


The coursework is worth 60% of the final grade. There are two pieces of coursework. The terminal exam is worth 40% of the GCSE grade. You will sit 2 papers. The first paper will be sat in year 10 and the second paper in year 11.


A GCSE in Design and Technology: Graphics will lead to a strong foundation for anyone considering a college course (A– Levels, BTEC or Art Foundation). GCSE Graphics also prepares you for a career in Graphic Design, Marketing, Product Design, Architecture, Web Design, Interior Design, Illustration, Animation, Design Management and any careers requiring creativity and problem solving.

You can ONLY choose GCSE GRAPHICS if you have studied Graphics or Resistant Materials in Year 9.
